Why we operate this station.

The Scarborough Special Events Group is a group of like minded Radio Amateurs who have an interest in using their hobby to enhance its reputation as an organisation that helps within the community. Since the group was formed in 1988 many special event stations have been operated promoting or celebrating local and sometimes national events. The first station was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mallard steam locomotive obtaining the world speed record other stations have been to promote and support Scarborough Fayre, English Heritage, North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Yorkshire Day and the 200th anniversary of Scarborough Lifeboat Station.

So when it was mentioned to the group that a station to promote the RNLI's Save Our Soles could be a good idea the group said an immediate "YES" and so the first station ws born. Ofcom very generously permitted what we believe to be the first ever 4 letter suffix and so we were allocated GB4RNLI. and the station then operated over a weekend and then daily up to and including SOS day giving wide publicity to the event and raising awareness of the work of the volunteers of the RNLI.
